Borrow & Request

Learn what you can borrow, how long you can keep it, all of your options for getting books and more.

**Direct borrowing for University of Pittsburgh users and special borrowers is currently suspended and access to the libraries is restricted to CMU affiliates only. Materials can however be requested through your local library or home institution’s Interlibrary loan service. Please see your local library or home institution for more information on this.**


Current CMU students, faculty and staff must present a valid CMU ID to borrow materials. **currently suspended**

All others must purchase a Special Borrower card from the Hunt Library main circulation desk. **currently suspended**

University of Pittsburgh students, faculty and staff with a valid University of Pittsburgh ID may also borrow materials.

Who can borrow and for how long?

Borrowing Technology

** Technology Lending is suspended until further notice.
In the interim, you can reach out to Computing Services regarding your technology needs**

The Libraries has a growing collection of multimedia and technology devices available for you to borrow. You will need your CMU ID card to borrow any device. Most devices require that you submit a Multimedia Borrowing Agreement form before borrowing.

Renew Materials

Many CMU materials can be renewed online by following these directions:

  1. Click on My Account.
  2. Log in using your Andrew ID and password.
  3. Click on your name.
  4. Choose “My Loans.”
  5. Select the items you wish to renew.
  6. Verify that your items have been successfully renewed.

If you receive an error, please contact us for further assistance.

Please request renewals for Interlibrary Loan books (requests from another institution) through your ILLiad account. Renewals of Interlibrary Loan materials are not guaranteed.


Recalling Checked Out Item

If an item is checked out, you can request a recall of the item. The person currently holding the item has 14 days to return it once the recall is placed. Recalled items can take anywhere from 1 week to 3 weeks to be returned to the library depending on when the item was checked out.

To place a hold request on a book:

  1. Search for the item in Books & More.
  2. Click on the item title in the results list.
  3. In the item record, click on Place Hold (next to the due date listed).
  4. Log in using your Andrew ID and password, if prompted.
  5. Choose a pick-up library from the drop-down menu.
  6. Click Submit Request. You'll be notified via email when the item is ready for you to pick up.

Other (sometimes quicker) options to recalling a book are to check the local holdings of nearby libraries for copies or to request the book via E-ZBorrow, which has a typical turnaround time of 3-5 business days.

Materials from Offsite Storage

If an item's location is "Offsite Storage- BY REQUEST," you'll need to request that we get it for you from our storage facility.

To request an item from offsite storage:

  1. Sign in to your library account
  2. Search for the item in Books & More.
  3. Click on the item title in the results list.
  4. In the item record, click on Request.
  5. Choose a pick-up library from the drop-down menu.
  6. Click Submit.

You'll be notified via email when the item is ready for you to pick up.

Can’t find a book? Request a trace.

If an item is listed as "Available" in the library catalog, but isn't in the expected location, you can try a few options

  1. Ask for help at a circulation desk. A circulation staff member can check re-shelve carts for the item and get more information about the item's history.
  2. If the item isn't on a cart and should be on the shelf, you can ask Circulation to do a trace. This means that we'll look for the item for you. If we find it, you'll be notified so you can check it out. A trace requires that you fill out a short form at the circulation desk.
  3. If a trace is unsuccessful, we'll notify you and suggest other options, such as E-ZBorrow or ILLiad, for getting a copy of the item. If an item can't be found, it will be marked as missing or lost in the catalog, so that we know to replace it.
  4. Sometimes it's faster to see if a nearby library has a copy of the book. It might also be faster to try E-ZBorrow or ILLiad.

Request from Other Libraries

If you need access to materials that CMU does not own, you may be able to request materials from other institutions using the following services:

  • ILLiad: Request books, articles, theses and more! (First time users will be asked to register before requesting items)
  • E-ZBorrow: Request books from 50+ participating academic libraries. Turnaround is typically 3-5 business days.

Both services require you to use your Andrew ID and password to log in (for E-Z Borrow, you can also log in using your 9-digit CMU ID number). You will be notified by email when your materials are ready for pick up.

Multimedia equipment $25 every 24 hours fines + replacement cost
*fines go to SIO account and cannot be paid at Libraries
Tech gadgets (calculators, phone chargers, Mac chargers, USBs) 50¢ / an hour fines + replacement cost + $25 processing fee


In some cases, outstanding fines, un-returned items, or outstanding bills may lead to a block on your account. Users with blocked accounts are unable to borrow or request items until the issue with their account is resolved.


Another user has recalled an item you have checked out You have 14 days to return an item once you receive an email notification. Please return the item to a circulation desk.
You have overdue fines CMU affiliates: Your fines exceed $25 or you have 10 overdue items.
Non-CMU affiliates: Your fines exceed $0 and/or you have overdues items.
You have overdue Course Reserves Course Reserves cannot be removed from the library. If you remove a Course Reserve item or fail to return it after 2 hours, your account will be blocked until you return the item to the circulation desk.
